ARTIST INTERVIEW: Lou Berc - Antwerp, Belgium

Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of?

Any project that has reached an audience and been able to thrill people is a project I am proud of. As a producer, you start out with an endless string of songs sitting on a folder on your computer somewhere. You occasionally let your creations be heard by family or friends, but in se you take them to your grave, so to speak, without anyone ever even listening to your “art projects. Going from the initial release, creating a reach and audience, ending up in Beatport's top 100 multiple times, receiving direct feedback from one of your idols to hearing your song in a nightclub. All of those things are small to medium achievements each time that I can tick off and gives a drive to make music.

How would you describe your style?

I would describe my style as melodic, rather calm and almost meditative at times.

Of course I'm inspired by what I listen to myself, but I've developed my own style without trying to copy others. Does this mean that this makes my music stand out? Absolutely not. I think if I did, the success would be greater, but the satisfaction less, because I would be denying myself. In summary, beach club, lounge music to unplug, to keep you in a steady workflow, to enjoy, hopefully (haha).

Analog or digital and why?

The combination these two worlds. Analog equipment is fascinating, increases your creativity because you are away from your monitor, at the same time it comes at a cost (haha). I prefer an analog Moog Subsequent 37, but since my budget is limited, I rely on the fantastic digital Arturia Collection with plugins such as the coveted Moog, Prophet and Jupiter 8 Synth, among others. I also use Reason as a DAW, because it still gives you the feeling - albeit digital - that you are working with analog equipment and can cross wires, which also teaches you more about how the basics work of a synthesizer and certain processing.

What's your typical work process?

To keep my creativity high, I always vary my starting method.

I play the piano, so obviously I like to transfer ideas from the piano to my DAW.

Sometimes I start with the drums, to build up instrumentally from there. Another nice working method is to design a certain sound in Reason and use that to determine if it will be used for chords, a melody, Fx or pad. Then I try to find matching sounds, record them, and afterwards eliminate them to the sounds that the song needs. Less is more is sometimes said, and when I listen to my idols' songs this is true. There it's all about a professional mix with nuances and composition that make and keep it interesting.

Tell us about your studio setup.

I have a Mac with the DAW Reason, which serves as the core of my music production setup. Additionally, I use a Roland Juno-Di Synthesizer that provides a wide range of sounds. My setup also includes an Impact GX61 MIDI keyboard, offering a seamless interface for composing and performing melodies. I use the Korg NanoKontrol2 for hands-on control over mixing and adjusting various parameters. Finally, I have an AKAI MPD218 drum pad, ideal for creating dynamic beats and rhythms. While my equipment is relatively simple, it fully meets my creative needs and allows me to produce music efficiently and effectively.

What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

It actually all started with a State of Trance and Above and Beyond's Group Therapy which I stuck with for a very long time before taking the step to producing myself. After that, a world opened up full of fantastic artists and I became deeply passionate about melodic- and progressive house. To name just a few: Jody Wisternoff, LeYouth, Jerro, Sultan+Sheppard, Tinlicker, Martin Roth, Ben Böhmer, Fejkà, Klur, StereoClip, Jan Blomqvist, Yotto, ...
